Douglas Boyd and Manchester Camerata made an indelible mark with their Avie recording debut of Beethoven’s Symphonies No. 2 and No. 5. This is the second release in their series for the label with a live recording of the chamber version of Mahler’s Fourth Symphony. Mahler’s most neo-classical symphony lends itself well to Erwin Stein’s reduction for fifteen players and soprano, which was transcribed in 1920 for Schoenberg’s celebrated Society for Private Musical Performances. More than a curiosity, this intimate adaptation facilitated wider circulation of the work and to this day illuminates important aspects of the work. |
