ROH announces young composer competition

Young composers will have the chance to hear their work played in one of Britain's most prestigious classical music venues, thanks to a fanfare competition launched by The Royal Opera House (ROH) and NUMU, an online resource for students to showcase music. Winners will have their 30-second composition recorded by the ROH Orchestra and played in the venue's ‘front of house' areas to call audiences to their seats.
The contest is open to all 11 to 14 year-olds in the UK, working either individually or in groups. Fanfares can be submitted online via NUMU's website (www.numu.org.uk/fanfare ) and will be judged by a panel of experts, including Barry Wordsworth, music director of the Royal Ballet Covent Garden, and ROH chief conductor Antonio Pappano. Competition organisers hope that it will encourage young people to experiment with music.
‘I think it's a terrific idea,' says Pappano. ‘We might discover some incredible talent, but the important thing is that young people create music.'
