Children from Kirk Sandall Junior School in Doncaster worked with a Composer, Camerata Musicians and a Visual Artist to create a new piece of music - Portrait of Doncaster - which was inspired by their daily lives. 

Taking inspiration from Camerata’s 2011/12 season theme of Portraits and as part of the Portraits of Place learning project, young people from Kirk Sandall Junior School worked with a composer Andy Smith, Camerata musicians Amina Hussain (flute) and Helen Quayle (trumpet) and Visual artist Katy Hayley, to create a portrait of Doncaster in music, photographic collage and live visual image mixing. 

The result was a new piece of music and a photographic collage that reflected their experiences of their locality, lives and what living in Doncaster means to them.

The children created their own lyrics, composed their own music and took their own photographs as well as doing some research along the way, to find ‘beautiful in the ordinary’ as they reflected on their own views of Doncaster.

The photographs will stand alongside Portraits from other areas to create a large geographic photographic collage.

The installation will feature as a pre-concert exhibition piece at The Bridgewater Hall, Manchester later in the season.
