Spent the Day in Bed

OK, I do have a current favourite which is “Spent the day in bed” by Morrissey.

Never been a massive Morrissey “fan” but like a lot of Smith’s things.  This one is about the Lyrics and I have to say I have deliberately not checked the BBC news website since I heard it.  This is a massive change in habit for me as it was my default thing to do with my phone when I had a spare moment.

Surprisingly, the world has continued just fine in spite of my increased ignorance of the news.

The Specials

Toots and The Maytals

Monkey Man

Recently I had a phase of listening to various Ska artists such as Prince Buster, Desmond Decker, The Maytals, Specials, Madness and even Buster Bloodvessel.

Out of that lot I would pick:

Monkey Man – which the Specials did a high energy version of but I also like the original by The Maytals

Specials Version

Mamie Galore

It Ain’t Necessary

A favourite old Northern Soul record I love is by Mamie Galore and I regularly go back to that for a bit of reflection.

“It Ain’t Necessary” by Mamie Galore

Black Grape

Reverend Black Grape

Got Black Grape album playing in my car at the moment, “its great when you’re straight” from which I would choose “the Reverend Black Grape” – which is not so PC these days I guess!

Pet Shop Boys

Go West

For a bit of grand-standing I love a bit of Pet Shop Boys, and my go to track is Go West, turned up loud in the car and shouting my version of the lyrics!

Roberta Flack

The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face

I should mention my wedding song which was “the First Time Ever I Saw your face” by Roberta Flack – again much better when played on vinyl with that atmospheric hiss that is sadly missing in the digital versions.

Mik Artistik

Plastic Fox

Not really on my list, but a bit of Manchester fun anyway … and totally off the wall, this has recently been brought to my attention, and I really liked was “Plastic Fox” by Mik Artistik’s Ego Trip.  It’s the mad lyrics that I really liked.
