As a part of the 2009 Chester Summer Music Festival Year 6 children from Upton Westlea Primary School in Chester worked with featured festival composer, Graham Fitkin and Manchester Camerata musicians to create their own new piece of music called Fantastico! during a three day residency, taking their inspiration from another featured Festival composer Henry Purcell.
To create their new piece participants explored composition techniques and played a key role in the composition process by leading the creative direction and decision making. Simultaneously the class developed new performance and team work skills during rehearsals for their pre-concert sharing of their new work at Chester Cathedral.
This project was the first component in a year-long series of Northwest-wide learning projects which are unified under the title Songs of the Earth and supported by the Bank of America Charitable Foundation.
